England’s Food Waste Changes – We’re Ready

Ulster Shredders: News & Media

England is preparing for one of the biggest shifts in food-waste management in decades – and waste processors and AD operators are gearing up for major increases in feedstock volumes. Ulster Shredders is ready to support that transition.

With the UK Government allocating £295 million to ensure weekly household food-waste collections across England by March 2026, significantly more organic material will be diverted from landfill and directed into anaerobic digestion (AD).

More than 10 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the UK, contributing over 18 million tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions. Redirecting this material into AD will increase renewable-energy generation, strengthen domestic energy security and support the circular economy.

Why pre-processing matters

As incoming food-waste volumes grow, AD operators and waste-processing facilities are prioritising robust front-end treatment.
Ulster Shredders’ low-speed, high-torque machines help:

  • Homogenise food waste into a consistent, pumpable slurry
  • Reduce contamination and protect depackaging equipment
  • Improve overall digester performance and biogas yield
  • Reduce downtime in high-duty organics operations
  • Industry validation

BioteCH4, a leading specialist in food-waste processing and AD optimisation, emphasised the essential role of shredding:

Shredding is now fundamental to efficient food-waste treatment. We process thousands of tonnes each week, and consistent pre-shredding has been pivotal in improving de-packaging performance, stabilising digester feedstock, and maximising gas output. Ulster Shredders’ machines have proven reliable in the high-duty environments we operate in.

Powering the food-waste system of the future

Ulster Shredders is already working with waste processors and AD operators across the UK & Ireland to strengthen front-end reception and pre-treatment systems capable of handling the higher tonnages expected under England’s new food-waste regime.

As the sector prepares for increased organic throughput, shredding has become a vital first step in ensuring stable, efficient and high-yield AD operations. Ulster Shredders is proud to support the companies driving this transition.
